Starting with Art
Art and interior design have been residing together for centuries but my question is where do you start with a new interior project?
As a teenager I was gifted a beautiful piece of art from my grandad, it has never left my side. Many houses and interior changes later it has become a design influence along with something I treasure. It is amazing how versatile art can be. I have drawn on many interior styles from this beautiful piece, ranging from calm relaxing spaces to eye popping vibrant rooms, it fits them all. I take different elements, including colours and textures and project them into an interior. Here are a few observations I have made on the way. I jot these down with eagerness and hope that you enjoy the amazing design opportunities...
Paint Selection with Colour Inspiration
Extract the idea of art being shown in a sterile gallery, instead embrace the colour itself, after all it’s a personal preference to fit within your surroundings. Start by choosing a small selection of shades from the piece and envisage them within your interior. Use a paint chart to match up the chosen colours then experiment with test pots. Remember the relationship between your colour choice and existing furniture need to be balanced, whether it's a fresh look, neutral tones or a cocktail of colours that you are after, be sure that everything is considered.
Adding Texture and Textiles
I love oodles of texture which give depth and visual weight to an interior. I am lucky enough to have a sister that makes beautiful soft furnishings for me and all I need to do is choose a colour and design, naturally, inspired from my beloved art piece. There is an abundance of help and inspiration out there when it comes to fabric design selection, I normally pick out a dominant hue for the soft furnishings and the others as accent colours, it's all in the eye of the beholder.
Experimenting with Accessories
I hoard accessories, gallery pieces, craft fair finds, charity shops and more, they are swapped around regularly in our house. I love the way they can quickly and easily change a space. I place accessories alongside my wall art and see how material, textures and scale can interact with each other. Depth, warmth, light and colour are all key in achieving your perfect personal interior style.
A Focal Point
A beautiful art piece will not only be versatile within an interior but it is also a great focal point. When both framing and positioning your art take in consideration the look you want to achieve. Again, have a look around for styling guides on hanging and framing pictures then choose what is right for you. The first consideration for me is natural daylight in the room, enough to show off the picture but not positioned in direct sunlight even when UV filtering glass is used.
