An Adventure

I arrived at the nature reserve by boat, my home for the entire summer. No shops, no cars, no neighbours, just me and my family. I thought “What is there to do?'' As it happens there was miles and miles of exploring on this wonderful three mile sand, marsh and shingle spit situated on the North Norfolk coast. That summer, nature drew me in and instilled a lifetime of wonderful memories spent on Blakeney Point.

To help capture life experiences like these within my home, I incorporate sensory multi-layers of art, fabrics and ceramics. Art can revitalise our memories and allow us to stop and reflect on taste, smell, sight, hearing and touch from past experiences.

We all have our own perception when viewing artwork and sometimes different to how the piece had evolved by the artist, as often said “in the eye of the beholder”. I have picked out a few of Chris’s art works that connect my senses to these happy summer days.

Atmosphere

It is this piece called Scape that reminds me of walking on the vast salt marshes and feeling the warm surface baking in the summer heat. The salt water left behind in small divots and pools making white and ochre patterns as it dries embedded in the rich colours of the mud until the tide rises again.

Sights

This piece is called Line of Light and I see it as the line between the sky and sea, watching the ruby evening sunset, the last light on the shore followed by the sense of awe in the pending night sky and the grand finale of star gazing.

Motion

Reminiscent of the movement and rhythm of swimming in the harbour at night, activating little bioluminescent sea sparkles in the warm sea that are like explosions of glitter dancing on everything that moves around them giving off bursts of organic fireworks that fade as quick as the next erupts. beautiful maths - 2017

Sensory

Translucent circular movements created whilst paddling in the shallow water and watching the glistening sunshine dance on the surface together with the fresh salty breeze driving whistling sand over the vast golden beach. The scent of the clean sea air and the motion drawn through the landscape is captivated within this piece called Beautiful Maths.

Art can help us revisit cherished memories by igniting our senses. Art, and the expression of art is something that everyone can enjoy and take us to places where we are able to relax and restore. The natural world is always present in our artwork despite the perceived clinical accuracy of digital it’s never cold, there’s always a soul in the art we produce. It recreates and reinforms us of life’s experiences and what we felt in those moments.
